The fortress

Cheonsaengsanseong Fortress and General Gwak Jae-u

  1. Origin of the name

Cheonsaengsan (천생산) has a flat summit ridge, and its sides look like natural cliffs set upright. It is said that people named it Cheonsaengsan (天生山), “the mountain born of heaven,” because it looked as if it had come from the sky.

  2. Area it covers

The mountain spans Sin-dong (신동), Hwangsang-dong (황상동), Geumjeon-dong (금전동) and Jangcheon-myeon (장천면), all in Gumi City.

  3. A key point of defence

Together with Geumosanseong Fortress (금오산성), Cheonsaengsanseong Fortress (천생산성) served as a key point of defence whenever foreign forces invaded.

  4. The Imjin War

During the Imjin War (임진왜란), General Gwak Jae-u (곽재우, 郭再祐), known as the “Red-Robed General” (홍의장군), fought many battles against Japanese forces here, and many historic sites from that time remain on the mountain.
